More information about Torsten Janson:
Torsten Janson is senior researcher at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) at Lund University. He has his background in Islamic studies, with a research focus on Muslim identity and Islamic organizations in Europe.
He received his Ph.D. in Islamic Studies in 2003 with the publication of his dissertation Your Cradle Is Green: The Islamic Foundation and the Call to Islam in Children’s Literature. Since then, he has been teaching Islamic studies at Lund University, and Religion and Pedagogics at Malmö University Teacher’s College. In 2010, he joined the CMES as Director of Studies, establishing the Lund University MA-program in Middle Eastern studies.
Apart from his continued research interest for Islamic children’s literature and other examples of ’religious merchandise’, he is involved in a research project in refugee studies, focusing culture, identity and education among Palestinian communities in Beirut, Lebanon. He also works with sociologist Neşe Karahasan, in a project on the role of religious symbolism in contemporary Turkish politics and nationalist discourse.
